Dundalk kept themselves in the First Division title race with a 2-1 win over Athlone Town in the midlands tonight. The win, Dundalk's first in seven away games keeps them at least in the mix should either Cobh Ramblers or Finn Harps slip up before the end of the season.
Paul Marney gave Dundalk the perfect start with the lead goal after only five minutes. Marney combined with Trevor Vaughan before flicking over Ciaran Kelly to find the net.
Thomas McGauley headed against the Athlone crossbar later in the half as Dundalk attempted to end their poor away form.
Vaughan made it 2-0 just after the hour as he got in on the end of Keith Dunne's through ball and finished superbly from inside the box.
Brian McCarthy headed a goal back for Athlone on 65 minutes as he got in on the end of Ryan Casey's corner kick.
Either side could have scored again before the end but Dundalk eventually ran out 2-1 winners.
