First half goals from Colin O'Brien and Denis Behan helped Cork City to a 2-1 win over UCD at Belfield Park tonight. The win lifts Cork second on their own in the League of Ireland Premier Division table - eight points behind leaders Drogheda United.
After an edgy and pretty uneventful first thirty minutes, Cork hit the front on 31 minutes as O'Brien hit his first league goal of the campaign/
Gareth Farrelly's near post cross picked out his fellow midfielder and O'Brien turned home as Cork kick started their challenge for the second place in the table.
Farrelly was again the provider as Behan netted his fourteenth goal of the season on 38 minutes. In on the end of Farrelly's long throw-in, Behan looped home a header to make it 2-0. The goal took Behan's tally to nine goals from the last six games - all of which he has scored in.
UCD improved after the break and under-21 international Conor Sammon went close after Ronan Finn had also gone close with a driven effort.
However, Leon McSweeney had a goal disallowed in slightly controversial circumstances and that surely would have killed off UCD's challenge had it stood.
Pat McWalter headed a goal back for the Students just inside the closing ten minutes as he got in on the end of Brian King's cross to score and give the College some hope in the dying minutes.
Cork held on for the win extending their unbeaten run to eight league games (eleven overall) and they look the form side in the race for second place and qualification for the UEFA Cup.
