Dundalk edged closer to confirming at least a promotion play-off place following their 1-0 win over Monaghan United at Oriel Park in the First Division of the League of Ireland on Thursday evening.

John Flanagan went close for Dundalk just before half-time after both sides had struggled to do anything of note in the first half.

Keith Dunne had an effort ruled out for offside as Dundalk began to press the away side.

Veteran striker Trevor Vaughan struck for what proved to be the only goal of the game midway through the second half. Vaughan fired home from the edge of the box after Robbie Dunne knocked the ball into his path.

Dundalk will be confirmed of a top three finish if Finn Harps beat Limerick 37 on Friday night.
